In 2003/04, an estimated 29.8 million working days were lost through self-reported sickness absence related to work. A high proportion of these were attributed to stress, anxiety or depression and muscular skeletal disorders.

Muscular skeletal disorders (in particular those affecting the back and upper limbs) were the most commonly reported absence, with an estimated 1,108,000 employees affected.

Stress, anxiety and depression was the second most commonly reported work-related illness, with an estimated 557,000 employees affected.
